From McGarvey, J.W., Sermons delivered in Louisville, Kentucky (Cincinnati: Standard Publishing Company, no date), first published 1894. A sermon delivered by J.W. McGarvey at the Broadway Christian Church, Lexington, KY, 11 June 1893. J.W. (John William) McGarvey (1829-1911) was one of the leading ministers and religious educators of the American Restoration Movement.
In his continuing series on the problem of sin, McGarvey addresses the concept of "remission of sins." He equates remission with the simpler concept of "forgiveness," and asserts that remission of sins is something that by its nature can only be done by God's decision. The remainder of the sermon discusses the question, "How can I know that my sins are forgiven?" McGarvey criticizes reliance on a conversion experience as too subjective, and turns the focus instead to what God has promised in Scripture about forgiveness of the obedient believer.
